Founded in 1992, TMI is a well-respected leader in providing laboratory services to the environmental community. TMI is under the direction of David F. Carpenter, PhD. Dr. Carpenter has accrued extensive experience in all aspects of laboratory analysis during his career. He initiated his laboratory endeavors as a research microbiologist in the US Army Natick Research and Development labs where he had responsibilities, in one laboratory unit, for protecting military rations against microbial spoilage in the field, and in another laboratory unit, for investigating the chemical and microbiological parameters for ameliorating the water pollution caused by military munitions manufacture.
He also spent 10 years conducting applied microbiology research for Baxter Healthcare (now Baxter International) in support of sterilization and sterility assurance for health care products.

Most recently, Dr. Carpenter was the state laboratory director for the Illinois Department of Public Health, where he directed all of the environmental and clinical laboratory sections of the Division of Laboratories for 14 years.

Dr. Carpenter has also served on the Advisory Committee to the Director of the National Center for Environmental Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and currently serves on the Advisory Committee to the Administrator of the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) at USDA in Washington, DC.
